Memoir Titled: Capturing the Light - A Journey of Self Discovery

I’m writing this to preserve my memory of such an indescribable nine-year experience and to encourage other sailors to seek adjacent personal goals while sailing.

Description:

A memoir as the content that wraps around a photo book of my paintings and charts of the location produced while sailing around the world.

• The target audience may be only for me or published for the sailing market.
• A memoir as short essay in a sailing magazine.
• A memoir as a short essay in Plein Air magazine.

Elevator Pitch:

This is the story of an epic adventure of sailing about the world for nine years on our sailboat, Sky Pond, and how our lifestyle of isolation, confinement and challenging ocean passages enabled me to achieve my lifetime goal of becoming a watercolorist.

What I felt were conflicting paths, were, in fact, converging journeys.

The deepest conflict at the heart of your story;

• To fulfill my husband's dream of living aboard a sailboat and sailing around the world, I must set aside my lifelong aspiration of becoming an artist. - My husband is my greatest fan and supporter.
• Feeling that I couldn’t accomplish my goal in isolation, without professional instruction. - this turned out to be an advantage because I developed my own methods of improving my work and my own, identifiable painting style.
• Painting and drawing in rough anchorages was frustrating - this was necessary since it taught me to simplify my subjects and paint with quick and precise strokes

Digital detox - Yes to a large degree. Journaling will be combined with abstract collage making which has been a goal of mine and will contribute to my painting.

Goal for end of the class - to finalize my memoir, insert into my photo book (already underway) and print a draft copy.
