A taco stand with smoke rising and sizzling meat. Che rapid-fires Spanish and the taco man takes the carne and chop-chop-chops it and whips out the food onto little styrofoam trays. A woman smack-smacks tortillas into shape with her hands and those hit the grill with the smell of corn and hot oil. Now Danders is ravenous from the long ride and he brings a taco into his mouth, the lime and onion and cilantro, the agonizingly good salsa, the crunch and fat of the beef, the hot tortillas, and another taco, and then a cool fizz of Charro beer straight from volcanic springs. Che is beaming at him, loving to watch him eat, his desire for it and his enjoyment of it and the fact he loves tacos—that’s a good sign, right mama? Could there ever be a night as grand as this?
